This position is with RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company—the second-largest U.S. tobacco company. The company's brands include Newport, Camel and Pall Mall.

Position Description:

With strong leadership and technical expertise, this position supports Company and R&D strategies within the Vapor Systems Discovery group by driving execution and providing electrical engineering guidance to internal and external partners, on both domestic and global projects. This individual will be required to independently evaluate and recommend solutions to complex electromechanical and consumer electronics engineering problems/issues in situations where no direct precedent exists. This individual will execute non-traditional tobacco research programs and projects requiring creative thinking, independent research, and collaboration with other R&D scientists, external academic partners, vendors, and research contractors. This individual will be required to exhibit strong project management, communication, and organizational skills. This individual will be expected to execute technology assessment, proof of concept, and proof of application projects with changing priorities and demanding timelines. This individual must possess strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish collaborative relationships across various functional groups of the global company.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Drive technical progress of new vapor systems in the areas of power control, battery management, and user interaction – particularly leveraging expertise in circuit design, component selection, and software control methodologies.

  • Clearly communicate status, barriers, and direction to project stakeholders and leadership with data-based recommendations in alignment with company and R&D objectives.

  • Clearly communicate technical concepts to non-technical colleagues to aid decision-making.

  • Lead activities including concept development, feasibility analysis, scope definition, cost estimating, prototype evaluation, and performance characterization.

  • Independently evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, methods, and criteria using good judgment to make recommendations on project direction.

  • Identify and partner with external suppliers, vendors, and engineering service providers to drive test platform development and characterization.

  • Drive improvement through the ability to recognize unnecessary complexities and capability gaps. Proactively drive implementation of strategies to execute resolution.

  • Guides and influences working relationships with suppliers, professional organizations, academia, consultants, etc.

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) school in a relevant discipline (Electrical, Electronics, Electromechanical Systems, or other engineering disciplines may be accepted based on experience) plus a minimum of 5 years relevant experience.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience designing and developing complex electromechanical consumer products.

  • Demonstrated technical experience in industry, particularly in consumer electronics.

  • Experience translating User Requirements into Product Requirements and Technical Specifications and developing test plans

  • Project Management skills, including prioritizing project workstreams and resources to ensure activities are aligned with project timeline and business needs.

  • Ability to provide technical coaching/training and feedback.

  • Broad perspective and forward-vision on principles, theories and concepts in scientific function.

  • Ability to work and make decisions with minimal supervision.

  • Understanding of statistical methods for data analysis and measurement system analysis.

  • Strong Computer skills, including Microsoft Office Professional Suite.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Relevant experience may include;

  • Design/development/testing of consumer product goods

  • Electrical circuit and component design, analysis, and evaluation

  • Lithium-ion batteries

  • Small device assembly
