This position is with RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company—the second-largest U.S. tobacco company. The company's brands include Newport, Camel and Pall Mall.


R.J. Reynolds Tobacco is seeking an experienced Flavor Scientist responsible for the development of new and innovative flavor systems that supports the objectives of R.J. Reynolds Growth, Innovation and Harm Reduction platforms. The Scientist is responsible for leading the development and qualification of new flavors for tobacco products, including cigarettes, vapor products, tobacco heated products and smokeless tobacco products.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

The scientist must exhibit strong project management and technical leadership skills with minimal guidance. The scientist will be expected to lead the execution of multiple projects with changing priorities and aggressive timelines. He/she must be a self-starter, demonstrate competency in creative flavor development and possess excellent communication skills as he/she must be able to work in a diverse, multi-functional project team to accomplish the goals. The incumbent will collaborate across numerous internal functions including Product Development, Procurement, Quality Assurance and Manufacturing, as well as external vendors, in order to deliver successful outcomes within specified timelines.

  • Lead and support flavor development activities across multiple product formats (cigarette, vapor, tobacco heating, smokeless).

  • Ability to work cross-functionally and support project teams to execute new solutions.

  • Provide technical flavor support during the start-up and qualification of new flavor materials/ systems, vendors, and suppliers.

  • Ensure internal business and regulatory process compliance in development and implementation of flavor projects.

  • Provide technical flavor support for commercialization.

  • Ability to engage with stakeholders and external partners.

Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry, Biology or other related field preferred.

  • Must have at least 5 years of relevant experience.

  • Excellent project management, time management, team collaboration, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to conceive, plan and conduct work streams aligned with, and in support of, strategy.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software.

  • Strong business and technical writing skills, presentation skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to actively participate in a team-based environment and collaboratively work in cross-functional teams.

  • Ability to quickly develop credibility and begin influencing within the organization.

  • Excellent people and communication skills.
