Job Title: R&D Engineer – Vapor Systems Discovery
Through strong engineering problem-solving, technical communication, and organizational skills, this position supports research and development (R&D) activities for the Vapor market segment.
With guidance from senior colleagues and management, this individual will focus on mechanical design work, primarily to develop prototypes for Proof-of-Principle and Proof-of-Concept technology platforms, as well as to coordinate and often personally execute testing for those platforms. This individual will also be expected to perform mechanical design work supporting intellectual property (IP) filings, tooling or fixturing development for the Vapor Discovery laboratories, and provide CAD support for other teams within R&D as appropriate.
This entry-level position offers the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of tasks across multiple areas of engineering and science. From a mechanical engineering perspective, this includes: hands-on design, fabrication, testing, data analysis/visualization, and identification of key learnings. From a project management and communications perspective, this includes: cross-functional collaboration, planning/scheduling activities, technical presentations, and continual development of the ability to influence project direction with data-driven recommendations.
Consideration is given to each individual’s strengths and preferences when distributing responsibilities across team members from multiple engineering disciplines. This individual will initially operate in a supporting role on existing projects after onboarding, with the expectation for growth into leading projects of appropriate size and scope with guidance from senior colleagues and management.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
This individual will serve as a mechanical design focal point for Vapor R&D.
This requires a level of aptitude and experience in CAD (specifically SolidWorks) sufficient to develop assembly models containing parts that [a.] can be made, [b.] can be assembled with other parts, and [c.] will perform their intended function for testing.
This also requires clear communication with project stakeholders and capturing a thorough understanding of the workstream’s objective, in order to ensure that the desired models, visual aids, and/or physical samples are produced to their satisfaction.
Success in this role will be enhanced via an ability to efficiently design prototypes, tooling, and fixturing by leveraging existing parts or commercially-available materials (i.e. fasteners, seals) wherever possible.
Strong organizational skills are critical for effectively managing information related to this role, such as: CAD model revision control, data management (what was tested, when it was tested, under what conditions?), and maintaining timelines/deliverables related to ongoing work.
Project management skills; which at entry-level are skewed towards management of one’s own work and how it fits within larger programs; as opposed to leading teams or directing external partners. Accordingly, these skills would include: developing plans and schedules, estimating cost and timing, communicating risks or barriers, and coordinating inputs/outputs with the broader project team. In due course this individual will be expected to lead projects of increasing scope, complexity, and visibility over time.
This individual will be required to independently evaluate, select, and apply appropriate engineering techniques, materials, methods, and success criteria to make recommendations on project direction.
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology
Familiarity with various manufacturing methods (3D printing, injection molding, machining).
Experience performing tolerance stack analyses for mechanical assemblies.
Strong understanding of statistics and data visualization in MS Excel.
Working-knowledge of basic electrical engineering principles.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
