Research & Development – Scientist IV
The Tobacco Agronomy Scientist is responsible for establishing and maintaining on-farm tobacco research contracts and executing field trials complete with crop establishment, data collection and record keeping, along with statistical analysis and report writing. The individual must possess strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills with the ability to establish collaborative relationships. He/she must be able to work well in a team environment as well as independently in their field of expertise. Extensive travel required with frequent overnight stays. Must be capable and willing to work in an often hot, humid, dirty, field environment and able to lift 50 lbs. independently.
Establish and maintain contracts with farmers for on-farm tobacco research field trials.
Participate and lead team efforts to clean and inventory tobacco seed and produce needed tobacco transplants for field trials.
Field plot lay-out and design for tobacco research in all types of tobacco: flue-cured, burley, dark-air, dark-fired and oriental.
Oversee transplanting, crop establishment and general agricultural practices required to produce a uniform tobacco crop for the purpose of field research.
Schedule harvesting, curing, grading and sampling of all field plots.
Submission of tobacco samples for chemistry analysis to outside contract labs and data retrieval and statistical analysis.
Final report writing to include recommended next steps based on results.
Advanced degree in Crop, Soil, Weed Science or related field; 3+ years of relevant tobacco experience. PhD or Masters preferred.
Minimum (2) years experience in conducting field trials for tobacco or similar crop.
Excellent organizational skills and ability to keep accurate records in an on-farm field situation.
Highly skilled in the use of Microsoft Office Tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Strong and demonstrated ability to use statistical analysis software such as (SAS™, JMP™)
Experience with or ability to quickly learn and independently use software for barcoding to streamline data collection and databases for data archiving.
Excellent and demonstrated project management, time management and team collaborative skills.
Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
