This position is with RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company—the second-largest U.S. tobacco company. The company's brands include Newport, Camel and Pall Mall.

Scientist (Grade 33)– Materials and Packaging Development

Position Description:

The role will participate in the development of new and innovative materials and packaging that supports the objectives of R. J. Reynolds’ Growth, Innovation and Harm Reduction Platforms. The scientist is responsible for leading the development and commercialization of new materials, components and packaging structures for tobacco products, including cigarettes, vapor products and smokeless tobacco products.

The scientist must exhibit strong project management and technical skills. With guidance the scientist will be expected to execute materials and packaging development projects with changing priorities and demanding timelines. The individual must be a self-starter and possess excellent leadership and communication skills. He/she must possess strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish collaborative relationships. The individual will be required to participate in highly diverse, multi-functional project team to accomplish the goals. He/she must be capable of utilizing sound scientific principles to provide innovative solutions to problems. The individual will be expected to collaborate across numerous internal functions including Marketing, Product Development, Procurement, Supply Chain, Engineering, Quality Assurance and Manufacturing, as well as external vendors, to deliver successful outcomes within specified timelines.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and implement materials and packaging that deliver commercial and product requirements.

  • Lead with guidance multiple projects under demanding timelines while maintaining appropriate and required project documentation.

  • Work directly with Consumer Marketing and Product Development to develop solutions.

  • Provide technical leadership and collaborate cross functionally with various groups and suppliers to ensure solutions and materials scale up for commercialization.

  • Ensure internal business and regulatory process compliance in development and implementation of projects.

  • The scientist must possess the ability to become a subject matter expert on materials and converting processes.

  • Provide technical leadership for continuous improvement initiatives, including cost reduction efforts, manufacturing efficiencies and related issues.

  • Develop and provide prototypes.

Position Qualifications:

Required Skills:

  • BS in a technical field such as Engineering, Paper Science, Packaging Technology or Materials Science.

  • Leadership and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to manage numerous, simultaneous projects.

  • Strong project management and team work skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal, written/oral communication and presentation skills.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software.


  • Basic understanding of pulp and paper science, plastics, nonwovens, metals, converting, material printing and decorating.
