This position is with RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company—the second-largest U.S. tobacco company. The company's brands include Newport, Camel and Pall Mall.


This position reports to the Director of Strategic Sourcing – Direct Materials for R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company (RJRTC) and is accountable for the end-to-end Procurement process within the assigned areas of responsibility. This Sr Manager position will develop sourcing strategies, champion key strategic sourcing events, and lead a team of Buyers to manage the Procurement sourcing, supplier management & supplier relationship activities supporting a vast array of categories and commodities for multiple RAI operating companies and the global procurement function within BAT.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manages team of Procurement personnel to facilitate the acquisition of materials and services in support of the sourcing requirements from various functional areas across the Operating Companies.

  • Evaluates staff requirements and plans/prepares for needs related to personnel development, training, attrition, succession planning, etc.

  • Provides leadership and direction to Procurement personnel responsible for the acquisition of materials and services in support of the sourcing requirements from various functional areas within the Operating Companies.

  • Conducts business process analysis and documentation, internal and external benchmarking efforts, the development and implementation of decision support processes and systems, and the evaluation of tools and applications to enhance the overall effectiveness of the Procurement organization.

  • Develops and implements metrics designed to measure organizational and supply base performance, as well as the development of effective tracking and reporting against these metrics.

  • Acts as a liaison with client departments to develop strategies which support their sourcing requirements while maintaining the overall best interests of the Company.

  • Ensures compliance with policies and procedures that are applicable to Procurement operations.

  • Responsible for the leadership, coaching and development of personnel with focus on obtaining individual, departmental, and Company performance goals.

  • Maintain appropriate supply base and conducts periodic performance reviews with major suppliers

  • Support and contribute to Total Product Cost (TPC) and Enterprise Spend Management (ESM) programs and initiatives in the identification of savings opportunities, effective project management, and the tracking of realized savings.

  • Develops advanced sourcing strategies and leads the implementation of these strategies in a broad commodity group or groups. Leads Procurement personnel and client area to deploy sourcing strategies.

  • Manages outsourced relationships associated with Procurement.

  • Manages and participates in leading cross-functional projects and initiatives designed to deliver step changes in the overall effectiveness and efficiencies of the procurement organization.

  • Ensure that personnel are adequately trained, developed, motivated, and held accountable for their performance; develop strategies to manage the knowledge base and ensure that the workforce is prepared for future challenges and requirements.

  • Oversee the management of supply base risk and performance and ensure appropriate strategies and key supplier management tools & activities are properly utilized to mitigate risk (Supplier Segmentation, FDA Relevant Assessments, Supplier Audits, Mutually Agreed Upon Material Specifications, Supplier Requirement Documents, Supplier Self Assessments, Material & Supplier Qualifications, Supplier Business Continuity Plan Assessments, Confidentiality Agreements, Supply Contracts, etc.).

Job Requirements:

High School Diploma or equivalent and 12+ years of relevant work experience OR Associate Degree in Business or related field and 9+ years relevant work experience OR Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Engineering or related field and 7+ years of relevant work experience OR Post Graduate Degree in Engineering, Business, or related field and 5+ years of relevant work experience.


  • Minimum 12 years relevant experience or equivalent education and experience

  • Demonstrated ability to work as a value-added team member

  • Experience in project management

  • Knowledge of Operating Companies processes and strategies

  • Experience within an FDA regulated environment

Required Skills:

  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to set strategy and direction

  • Demonstrated ability to build effective teams and foster collaboration across internal client teams and the supply base

  • Ability to make sound and timely decisions in a fast-paced environment

  • Excellent managerial skills with the ability to resolve conflict, provide coaching, direction, feedback, and develop a vision

  • Possess core procurement skills in negotiating, contracting, supplier management, spend & data analytics, and supplier relationship management

  • Ability to analyze data and perform dimensional analysis

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, verbal, and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated project management, time management, and team collaboration skills

  • Strong functional knowledge of computers, information systems, SAP, Microsoft Office applications and Coupa suite of tools

  • Self-motivated, energetic, flexible, and adaptable to change

Preferred Skills:

CPSM (Certified Professional in Supply Management) preferred

Management experience within a regulated environment
