This position is with RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company—the second-largest U.S. tobacco company. The company's brands include Newport, Camel and Pall Mall.
With solid leadership, technical, and creative problem solving skills, this position supports and drives fast-paced product development initiatives for a growing market in support of strategic initiatives.
The position offers the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of challenging and engaging tasks ranging from hands-on design and fabrication of prototype systems and experiments, to co-developing product platforms in collaboration with internal and external engineering/design resources, to establishing wide-reaching project plans and driving timelines and action items. Strong consideration is given to each individual’s strengths and preferences when distributing responsibilities between team members to ensure the best outcomes.
The position involves quickly coming to speed on state-of-the-art technologies and design features related to vapor or other Next Generation Products (NGP), furthering the development or vetting of emerging technologies, and selecting/applying the appropriate technologies and design features to new and/or improved products on the development timeline.
The position relies on collaborating within own function and cross functionally, developing solutions to complex scientific and engineering problems and building technical credibility and influence inside and outside the organization. Creativity and innovative techniques are encouraged to support development and implementation of improved and/or new innovative product platforms, while maintaining high standards of integrity and adhering to all applicable regulations and procedures.
At full potential, the Sr. Scientist will have established a broad perspective on the scope of work required to successfully and efficiently complete the development of new and/or improved product platforms. This perspective will allow autonomy and self-direction to predominate as necessary workstreams and proper prioritization become apparent.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead product development activities including concept development, feasibility analysis, scope definition, cost estimating, requirements development, component/system design, prototype evaluation, product risk/hazard review, specifications development, vendor evaluation, resource allocation, design for manufacturing, design verification, and manufacturing transfer
Identify and partner with external suppliers, vendors, and engineering service providers to develop new products and/or components
Responsible for identification, vetting, development, and/or application of new technologies, processes, and scientific methods
Identifies, develops, and implements initiatives and may act as project lead or project manager
May lead or coordinate the work of others
Drives continuous process improvement through the ability to recognize unnecessary complexities and process gaps and recommends/implements solutions
Develops recommendations and influences stakeholders
Leverages broad understanding of Company objectives to derive most applicable project plans or workstreams to support NGP strategies
Develops solutions to complex problems
Works efficiently in a fast-paced environment
Works independently in a mostly self-directed work environment
Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) school in a relevant discipline (Other engineering disciplines may be accepted based on experience)
2 or more years relevant design / development experience
2 or more years relevant project leadership experience
Solid application of scientific and engineering principles
Project leadership, including prioritizing project workstreams and resources to ensure activities are aligned with timelines and deliverables
Ability to effectively coordinate the work of 3rd party support resources
Strong Computer skills, including Microsoft Office
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Design/development of consumer products
Experience translating User Requirements into Product Requirements and Technical Specifications and developing test plans
Risk/Hazards Assessment, FMEA, FMECA, HACCP, Validation, or other assessment tools/methods
Experience working in a regulated environment (food, drug, device, tobacco)
Hands-on ability to design/build/test prototype products, product sub-systems, test equipment, and/or specialized test fixtures
Working knowledge of product components such as injection molded parts, assembled circuit boards, metal stampings, and/or lithium-ion batteries
Ability to thrive in a predominantly self-directed work environment
Ability to mentor less experienced technical staff
Computer skills including Microsoft Project and SolidWorks CAD
Regular attendance at work.
