This position is with RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company—the second-largest U.S. tobacco company. The company's brands include Newport, Camel and Pall Mall.

Position Description:

The Sr. Scientist - Product Development - Discovery will lead the development of new and innovative technology that supports the objectives of R. J. Reynolds’ Growth, Innovation, and Harm Reduction Platforms. Position reports to the Manager of NGP Product Development - Discovery and performs work focused on NGP technology and solutions. The scientist will be required to develop a clear understanding of company and consumer needs to convert those needs into technology concepts, technical evaluations, reports, and innovations. The scientist will work on non-traditional tobacco research programs and projects requiring creative thinking, independent research, and interaction with other R&D scientists, toxicologists, external academic collaborators, vendors, and research contractors. The scientist must exhibit strong project management, documentation, and technical skills. With guidance the scientist will be expected to execute technology advancement projects with changing priorities and demanding timelines. The individual must be a self-starter and possess excellent leadership and communication skills. He/she must possess strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish collaborative relationships. He/she must be capable of utilizing sound scientific principles to provide innovative solutions to current and future problems.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Drive experiments to understand materials and technology with regards to performance, chemistry, and sensory.

  • Understand Company and R&D strategy and how individual work is aligned with strategic plan.

  • Prioritizes work assignments and communicate results by applying business/scientific writing techniques.

  • Identify and develop expertise in new technologies that can be utilized internally for development of innovative concepts.

  • Design, develop, and understand new and innovative technological solutions.

  • Leverage innovative technologies and materials that present opportunities to ensure our products meet future product and consumer standards.

  • Translate consumer needs and market trends into strategic and tactical technological innovation.

  • Design and execute experiments, analyze and interpret data to make sound technical recommendations.

  • Develop attribute specifications for new technologies.

  • Participate as an active member of cross-functional business development teams.

  • Lead, with guidance, multiple projects under demanding timelines while maintaining appropriate and required project documentation.

  • Develop and provide prototypes.

  • Ensure internal business and regulatory process compliance in development and implementation of projects.

  • Support discovery activities including concept development, feasibility analysis, scope definition, prototype development, assessment, and transition to product development.

Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in a technical field such as Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology or Material Science.

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in fast paced highly competitive innovative environment.

  • SolidWorks or other CAD experience.

  • Ability to manage numerous, simultaneous projects.

  • Leadership, problem-solving, critical thinking skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal, written/oral communication and presentation skills.

  • Strong project management, multi-tasking, time management, team collaboration, and organizational skills.

  • Strong computer proficiency in MS Office software including Excel, Word, Power Point and Outlook.

  • Ability to conceive, plan and conduct work streams aligned with, and in support of, business strategy.

  • Ability to engage with stakeholders and external partners.

  • Ability to actively participate in a team-based environment and collaboratively work in cross functional teams.

  • Ability to quickly develop credibility and begin influencing within the organization.
